About Me

Education

I have a B.A. (Bachelor of Arts) degree and a M.F.A. (Master of Fine Arts) degree – both from the University of Alabama. Half of my undergraduate studies were done at Indiana University, where I was a ballet major, music minor in the School of Music. My B.A. is in Interdisciplinary Studies with a Dance Performance and Teaching emphasis. My M.F.A. is a 60-hour terminal degree in Book Arts.

I have attended countless workshops, conferences, and training seminars in all areas of the arts. My training includes ballet, jazz, modern, Flamenco, Irish step dancing, clogging, International folk dancing, ballroom, Latin, swing, Contra, among others. I have also had special training in teaching people with disabilities.

Teaching

Along with my Two Left Feet? and 1st Dance endeavors, I am currently on the dance faculty at Purdue University where I teach Ballet I, Ballet II, and World Dance Forms. I also work for VSAI (Very Special Arts of Indiana) where I teach movement, visual arts, music, and theatre to people with disabilities (pre-K through adults). I have taught dance since 1970, including ballet, jazz, ballroom, swing, Latin, folk, variations, pointe, men’s, pas de deux, and company classes. I have also taught visual arts, music, and theatre for many years. All of my classes are inclusive.

Choreography/Coaching

Performance coaching is one of my favorite things to! The finishing touches, the fine points, can make a performance go from so-so to WOW! I have done performance coaching for dancers, actors, singers, gymnasts, artists, and public speakers.

I have choreographed ballets, musicals (high school, civic, and university), wedding dances, competition, and demonstration pieces.

Performing

I have been on the stage since the age of 6 as a dancer, actor, musician, and singer. I have performed with Mikhail Barishnikov, Rudolf Nureyev, Natalia Makarova, and Patricia McBride, among others. I have worked with numerous world-renowned choreographers, directors, and conductors. My dance performance experience includes (but is not limited to) performances with the Louisville Ballet Company, Jahari Dance Company, and Gypsy Moon Cloggers (clogging and Irish step dancing).

My musical theatre performance experience began in 1965, with over 20 musicals to my credit. I was also a member of the Spare Time Music String Band (vocals, guitar, cello) for several years.

Book Arts

My M.F.A. (Master of Fine Arts) is a 60-hour terminal degree in Book Arts from the University of Alabama. This is one of only 3 accredited programs for Book Arts in the U.S. The Book Arts program consisted of training in hand papermaking (Eastern and Western), hand bookbinding, letterpress printing, computer book design, decorated papers, box making, book history, and more.
